Bright preppy styles dominate menswear trends

Milan’s spring 2027 menswear shows highlighted two American brands leading a trend: hyper-colorful preppy fashion. Thom Browne and Polo Ralph Lauren offered different interpretations of the look, shaping a season that combined bright hues with classic tailoring.

Thom Browne’s tailored twist

Browne’s collection reimagined collegiate prep through his signature sharp cuts. Models wore vivid madras shirts, technical nylon seersuckers, and graphic-check wools in saturated colors. One standout look featured an ankle-length bright green trench coat with a red vest, a striped button-down, and cropped pastel-yellow trousers. Accessories included a straw boater hat and white penny loafers, adding old-money polish to the bold palette.

Ralph Lauren’s playful prints

Polo Ralph Lauren took a more relaxed, sporty approach to preppy style. A primary-colored patchwork rugby sweater with crest embroidery anchored one outfit, styled with pleated white wide-leg pants and an oversized canvas boat tote. A polka-dot neck scarf and suede sneakers completed the look, blending Ivy League nostalgia with modern ease.

The aesthetic extended beyond American designers. Brands like Louis Vuitton, Sacai, and Kenzo adopted similar themes in Milan and Paris, pairing colorful tops and outerwear with neutral khaki pants or shorts. This shift marked a move away from luxury activewear toward a mix of American casualness and European tailoring.

At Louis Vuitton, Pharrell Williams presented models in a neon yellow parka with fur trim, layered over a striped knit vest and wide-leg plaid pants. Sacai’s look featured an oversized, lively green technical utility jacket with black accents, paired with a heather gray knit polo shirt and khaki-colored shorts.

Some brands used the preppy revival to experiment rather than revisit tradition. Ami’s cobalt blue anorak jacket and drawstring shorts had a streetwear edge, while Chavarria’s bright orange windbreaker with blue cuffs reworked varsity jackets. Wooyoungmi’s lime-green blouson jacket, paired with a silk necktie and a gem-stone necklace, merged formal and casual elements.

The trend’s strength comes from its adaptability. The same pieces can transition from office to weekend depending on accessories. A blazer and loafers make it professional, while sneakers and a tote keep it casual. The color range—from pastels to neon—also suits different seasons, even though the collections were designed for spring.

Preppy fashion has resurfaced before, but the spring 2027 version feels different. It contrasts with the minimalism and monochrome of recent years, offering playfulness in menswear. The bold colors and relaxed silhouettes suggest a shift toward more expressive styles.

Accessories as the finishing touch

No preppy look is complete without the right details. Sunglasses, scarves, and bags defined the spring 2027 aesthetic. Browne’s flat-topped straw boater and Ralph Lauren’s polka-dot neck scarf added whimsy, while Louis Vuitton’s washed-green baseball cap kept the looks modern.

Footwear varied widely. Penny loafers and dress shoes appeared alongside sneakers and sandals, showing the trend’s flexibility. Kolor’s technical trail running shoes, with their toggle lacing system, hinted at a sporty influence beneath the preppy surface.

Spring 2027’s colorful preppy trend reflects more than just clothing. Whether through Browne’s precise tailoring or Ralph Lauren’s effortless layering, the collections convey a clear message: menswear can be fun and bold.
